Equipment IV Glossary bins Equipment that receive products from storage silos and are used to feed or fill shipping containers such as boxes or super sacks. blanketing system A protective system that is created and used in pressure storage tanks to prevent creating an explosive situation. Also known as inerting. boiler The component in a power plant that burns fuel to produce heat, which converts water to steam. boiling The process of changing water to steam. box trailer A trailer that is covered and protects the freight that they haul. Used to haul boxes, pallets of materials or drums. certified scales Weighing scales in industry used to weigh a variety of shipping and receiving containers. Specific scales are designed to weigh boxes, super sacks, drums, truck trailers and railcars. chilled water system A type of refrigeration system used in a manufacturing area to route chilled water throughout a facility that is used in buildings for air conditioning or comfort air. compressor (refrigerant) A component of equipment (in a refrigeration system) that pumps the refrigerant around the refrigeration loop so the refrigerant can perform its function over and over again. condensate The water that is collected in a condenser as steam is condensed. condenser A component of equipment (in a refrigeration system) that removes heat from the refrigerant. condenser A large heat exchanger that removes heat from steam and thus converts the steam into water. cone tank A vertical, cylindrical tank with a roof that slopes gradually to a peak and forms a vertical cone. distribution system Includes the utility substations at the load centers, sub-stations lines (if needed), transformers and industrial substations. The distribution system routes power to the appropriate area at the proper voltage for utilization. downcomers Tubes that move warm water from the upper drum to the lower drum in a boiler. drum tank Also called horizontal tanks, they are cylindrical vessels built to withstand a given internal pressure. Usually, a drum is supported in the vertical position on a concrete pad or in the horizontal position on two or more concrete piers. drumming The filling, labeling, and preparing for shipment of liquids or bulk materials in drums. dry bulk trailer A trailers that is designed to haul dry bulk materials. dust collection system Collects dust out of the pneumatic line as the pellets are moved through the pneumatic line into the designated silo. economizer Section of the boiler where water is pre-heated before it is moved to the upper drum. electrical power system A system that creates, controls and distributes the appropriate electrical power needs to end users. elementary diagram Shows control and disconnecting means for motors, instrumentation, and other electrical equipment. The location of all equipment will be described on the diagram. evaporator This component (in a refrigeration system) that achieves the purpose of the system, which is to refrigerate a substance. flash tank A vessel used for separating a liquid phase from a gaseous phase. flatbed trailer Uncovered trailer with a flat bed that is used to haul very heavy pieces of freight and various shapes of equipment and other loads. floating roof tank A tank that may have a pan-like structure that floats on the top of the liquid (for example, oil). generating station Facility designed to produce electricity from another form of energy such as; fossil fuels, solar, nuclear, wind or water. heat transfer The movement of heat from a region or substance of higher temperature to a region or substance of lower temperature. hopper cone Lower part of a silo area that channels the product out of the silo. intermodal container Often referred to as ISO containers. They are cylindrical tanks that are built inside a rectangular framework that permits lifting and stacking on flatbed trailers. manway cover Allows access to a silo to visually see within the vessel. metering device This component (in a refrigeration system) that regulates the flow of refrigerant and allows low-pressure, atomized droplets of refrigerant to enter the evaporator. net weight The difference between the gross weight and the tare weight. panel directory Shows up-to-date specific information regarding circuits within a power panel. phase change When a substance changes its state of matter (solid, liquid or gas) as a result of temperature (heat transfer). pneumatic conveying Line or pipe in which solid particles are pushed or moved from one area to another. Depending on the characteristic of the material, air or inert gas will be pressurized to push the materials through the line. pressure storage tank A tank used to store volatile liquids that have a Reid vapor pressure greater than 18 pounds per square inch gauge (psig). railroad cars Cars that are similar to tank trailers but can carry a much larger capacity. The design of is much like that of trailers in that there are low-pressure and high-pressure tank cars, liquefied gas cars, high-pressure cylinder cars, cryogenic cars, hopper cars for granular solids, and gondola cars for larger solid materials. refrigerant A fluid that boils at relative low temperatures and will liquefy when pressure is applied that is higher than atmospheric pressure. refrigeration Process of removing heat to cool a substance or space. riser tubes Tubes in a boiler which transfers heated water from the lower drum back up to the upper drum. rotary valve A rotor with vanes that rotates in an encased housing and acts as a feeding device. saturated steam Steam that is at the saturation temperature that has no water present. saturated water Water near to the saturation temperature but is not yet boiling. saturation temperature The temperature at which boiling occurs. silo A structure which is designed for the purpose of storing large quantities of bulk materials. single-line diagram Show the power system with all three phases represented as a “single line”. This type of diagram is useful in determining where electrical equipment receives the power. sphere tank Pressure vessels shaped like a ball and supported above ground on tubular columns. steam cycle In a power plant, the complete loop cycle that is from the boiler, through the turbine, through the condenser, and back to the boiler. steam trap A device that has an automatic valve that filters out condensate and non-condensable gases such as air without letting steam escape. super sack Container usually made of heavy, woven cloth fabric, usually nylon or polypropylene and is used to contain larger amounts of dry materials. superheated steam Steam that has been heated above the saturation temperature. tank A vessel used for storing raw materials as well as a finished product. tank farm Several storage tanks located in a specific area. tank trailers Trailers that are designed primarily to haul liquids or gases. Temperature and pressure requirements of material carried will determine type of tank trailer used for transport. temperature The relative hotness or coldness of a substance. tote bin Container that can be used for either solids or liquids. Most have a loading valve, a removable lid on top and an unloading valve located on the bottom. tower silo Cylindrical tower whose volume or capacity of storage varies based on height and diameter. The structure can usually accommodate a lot of material. transformer Electrical equipment that is used to “step-up” or “step-down” voltage prior to being transmitted to various locations around the country. transmission system Consists of high-voltage (HV) or extra-high voltage (EHV) lines that transmit or carry the power from a generating source to lower level sub-station at a central point near the cities, towns or industrial load centers. turbine The component that converts the energy stored in steam into the mechanical energy needed to turn a generator. umbrella tank A tank that i
